Executive Function

Executive functions are the skills needed to plan, organize and navigate daily living. These skills are vital for day to day functioning, yet rarely taught directly. Many students with TBI need to have executive functioning skills directly taught and generalization planned into their curriculum. These skills are often addressed in a special education Individual Education Plan (IEP) and may be the focus of the specially designed instruction needed by the student. Coaches play a critical role in reducing the risks associated with concussion in young athletes. The athletic concussion training program (ACTive) is based on the the recommendations of leading sports concussion experts. A clinical trial funded by NIH showed that coaches who view the ACTive program have significantly greater knowledge of concussion symptoms and have increased confidence in making decisions about concussion management.
